2023 Funding Equity Report: Understanding the State of Funding and Sustainability of BIPOC Arts Organizations
Enrich Chicago has engaged TDC, a nonprofit research consulting firm in Boston, to perform the research and generate a follow-up report to our 2017 study, A Portrait of Inequity. This Project will address the following research questions:
1. Is funding for arts and culture addressing the needs of racial and cultural equity arts
organizations?
2. What is the impact of foundation grantmaking– is it maintaining or improving the health
of BIPOC organizations?
3. What organizations continue to be under-funded or excluded from foundation funding?
4. What different or improved practices can foundations employ to advance the long-term
sustainability of BIPOC arts and culture organizations?
The research process will include the following:
1. A literature review of relevant projects throughout the sector.
2. A follow-up survey with Enrich Chicago member grantors, their grantees, and their applicants.
3. A final report that highlights research findings and promising practices in arts funding.
This project will culminate in a one-day convening of Chicago arts organizations and area foundations where TDC will present the emerging research findings and gets input from the arts community to enrich the interpretation of the data. Learnings from this event will inform the final report.
